Approved permanent residence applicants- can you travel to Canada now?

Once you have received the approval of your permanent residence application, you will be issued a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR), and if required, a permanent resident visa (PRV). Due to the travel restrictions implemented in March 2020, many approved permanent residents have been unable to travel to Canada, resulting in the expiry of their COPR and PRV.

Applicants were instructed to submit a Web form to have their COPR and PRV reissued. As of January 5, 2021, applicants with an expired COPR and PRV are no longer required to submit a Web form. IRCC will be contacting applicants directly once they are approved to come to Canada.

Additionally, the following COPR/PRV holders are able to travel to Canada:

  1. Traveling from any country other than the US:

Approved permanent resident applicants are exempt from the travel restrictions and can travel to Canada for non-discretionary reasons with their COPR and PRV if they are entering Canada to settle and live permanently.

This applies if:

  • You have a COPR and PRV (if applicable) issued on or before March 18, 2020, that are still valid OR

  • You have an expired CORP and PRV issued on or before March 18, 2020 and have been contacted by IRCC and approved to travel to Canada. If you have not been contacted yet, do not contact IRCC, they will contact you.

Everyone must present an acceptable 14-day quarantine plan and negative COVID-19 test (if five years or older).

2. Traveling from the US

Applicants from the US can travel to Canada for non-discretionary reasons if they are entering to settle and live in Canada permanently.

This applies if:

  • Your application was approved, and your COPR and PRV are valid. OR

  • Your application was approved, you have received an expired COPR and PRV.

Everyone traveling to Canada must still present an acceptable 14-day quarantine plan and negative COVID-19 test (if five years or older).
