International students – expired or expiring PGWP holders. You can apply for a new open work permit!

A new public policy was introduced on January 8, 2021, for international students. International students bring so much to Canada’s economy and community and have been adversely impacted by the pandemic jeopardizing their chances of obtaining the work experience needed to apply for permanent residence.

Foreign nationals in Canada affected by the pandemic with an expired or expiring work permit will be able to apply for a new open work permit. Applications will be accepted from January 27, 201, to July 27, 2021. These permits will be valid for 18 months and allow international students to remain in Canada and continue to seek employment.

To be eligible to apply under this public policy, you must:

  • Have a PGWP that expired on or after January 30, 2020, or a PGWP that expires in four months or less from the date you apply.

  • Still be in Canada

  • Have valid temporary status or being applying to restore their status.

More information will be available on January 27, 2021.
